As part of our science topic on Changing States, we carried out an investigation to melt dark, milk and white chocolate and find out which melted the quickest. We used our observational skills and made sure the test was fair. As we predicted, the white chocolate melted first and the dark chocolate took the longest to melt. We talked about the different ingredients having different melting points.

In Neptune class we have continued to discover more about Quentin Blake's drawing style.

We practised some continuous line drawings on whiteboards and then into our sketchbooks.  We thuoght it was amazing how just one line could become a dog or a rooster or even an elephant!

We then had a go at drawing like Quentin Blake.  First of all, we all attempted to draw Fantastic Mr Fox and then we could chose to either create our own animal inspired by Quentin Blake or we could practise more animals in his style.

We think we did a pretty good job!

In art this term we are investigating the artistic style of Sir Quentin Blake.

To start off our work, we found out some information about him and presented it as a fact file.  Of course, we had to include examples of his very distincitve artwork!

These examples are not quite finished but they're already super!

We completed our work on 'under the sea' William Morris inspired printing.

The hard work and effort paid off and we think our prints are fab-u-lous!

In art, we have been inspired by the work of William Morris and by our under the sea topic.  We have made some relief printing tiles ready for printing next week!

We all enjoyed our whole school trip to The Deep, in Hull.

We were lucky with the traffic and had an easy journey each way!

Whilst we were there, we enjoyed being detectives in a workshop (using magnifying glasses and microscopes), rode up and down in the bubble lift and walked under water (well, under a tunnel!!).

In art we have been developing our painting skills.

We started with exploring primary and secondary colours through the colour wheel.  We learned how to mix colours and worked on painting carefully within the lines and using the correct brush.

Moving on from this we learned how to tint and to shade.  We practised adding a little of either white (tint) or black (shade) and created a tonal grid.  We then used these skills and applied them to our choice of sea creature.  We learned that to shade effectively, we only need to add a tiny little bit of black to change the main colour.

We then took inspiration from Hokusai's famous 'Great Wave' wood block art work.  We drew our own great waves and then completed them using our tinting and shading skills.  We also had to consider which brushes and strokes to use to create the best effect.  We are very impressed with our finished art work!

In English lessons, we have been learning how to write non-chronological reports.

We used our Talk for Writing process to 'activise' a model text, 'box up' the text and plan our own non-chronological report.  

After much anticipation we completed our 'hot write', where we enjoyed writing our own non-chronological reports.  Some of us chose to write them about real animals and some chose to write about mythical sea creatures.
